As the summer season approaches, the Indian government has approved the export of onions to Bangladesh, signaling a shift in the country's trade policies. Through the National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL), India has authorized the export of 50,000 metric tons of onions to Bangladesh, as per the notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
Under the DGFT notification, NCEL will facilitate the export of 50,000 metric tons of onions to Bangladesh. Last week, the government also granted permission to exporters to export 54,760 tons of onions to Bangladesh, Mauritius, Bahrain, and Bhutan by March 31st.
Speaking on the matter, the Secretary of Consumer Affairs revealed that the government has approved the export of 50,000 tons of onions to Bangladesh, 1,200 tons to Mauritius, 3,000 tons to Bahrain, and 560 tons to Bhutan with immediate effect. This decision comes following recommendations from the Ministry of External Affairs and is aimed at balancing trade interests while ensuring domestic availability.
It's worth noting that the government continues to regulate onion prices and domestic availability. A ban on onion exports was imposed until March 31st, 2023, to stabilize prices and secure domestic supply. However, the ban on onion exports remains in place, with no changes in the current situation.
Moreover, there's speculation that the export ban may not be lifted before the general elections post-March 31st, given concerns over lower-than-expected Rabi onion production, particularly in Maharashtra. The estimated Rabi onion production for the 2023 season stands at 2.27 million tons due to decreased coverage.
