Devastation due to rain and hailstorm, will Haryana not be able to achieve the target of wheat production?

wheat

In the year 2021-22, 112 million metric tonnes of wheat was expected to be produced. But due to the heat wave in March and April, the production was limited to 106.84 million metric tonnes as compared to 109.59 million metric tonnes in 2020-21. Scientists were expecting a production of 112 million metric tonnes in the current season.

The recent rains in Haryana have in a way broken the back of the farmers. The farmers were preparing that after 10-15 days they would harvest wheat and mustard and earn by selling them at the support price. But this hope probably went to nature's dismay and the unseasonal rains ruined all the wishes. Due to rain and hailstorm, there has been huge devastation in different areas of Haryana.

The devastation is such that the farmers are not able to understand how it will be compensated. The farmers are expecting and  demanding compensation and support  from the government. Agriculture Minister JP Dalal has also assured the farmers. But in the meanwhile a question has arisen whether Haryana will miss the target of wheat production this time also?

According to the farmers of many districts of Haryana, their crops of wheat, mustard and gram have suffered the most. Due to strong wind blowing with rain, the plants lay on the ground. After this hailstorm completely trampled the crops. This is more or less the situation in almost every district of Haryana. Till now water has accumulated in wheat fields and mustard seeds have fallen. Tears of hopelessness are welling up in the eyes of the farmers who had dreamed of earning from the produce.

Many farmers have taken to the streets for crop compensation and have demanded compensation for the damage by getting the survey done as soon as possible. Haryana Government's Agriculture Minister JP Dalal recently visited many areas and gave instructions for Girdawari. According to the Agriculture Minister, those farmers who have not registered their crops on the compensation portal, they will also be helped in another way.

The government is seen coming forward to help the farmers. But a big question is whether this year also Haryana will miss the target of wheat production like last year? Circumstances are indicating something similar. If there was no rain and hailstorm then this apprehension had no meaning. But the natural disaster has put a question mark on the target of wheat production.

This year the weather conditions were favorable for high yield and agriculture experts were expecting a bumper crop this year, but a sudden spell of rain and hailstorm in mid-March has played spoilsport. Last year, where the heat of February caused heavy damage to wheat and mustard, this year rain and hailstorm caused heavy damage.

But it will also decline because wheat production will fall due to weather. If this happens, it will be the second consecutive year when Haryana will miss the wheat production target.

According to IMD, hailstorm and rain occurred in most parts of Mahendragarh, Sirsa and Charkhi Dadri. Good rains have also been recorded in many other districts. Om Prakash Bishnoi, wheat scientist of Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University told 'The Tribune' that initial reports have said that there has been a huge loss to the late sown wheat crop.  The  timely sown crops or early sowing crops have also suffered some damage. After this, the farmers have demanded to get the Girdawari of the loss done soon. Farmers say that the wheat crop, which is at the stage of ripening, has been destroyed due to rain and strong winds earlier this week. Friday's rain is expected to have a big impact on the yield.
