Tea exports from India declined by almost 10 per cent to 137 million kg during the January-September period of 2021. However, during this period, higher prices were achieved for Indian tea in foreign markets. According to the Tea Board data, India exported 153 million kg of tea in the same period a year ago.
Industry sources said the fall in export volume was mainly due to non-availability of cargo containers. The total value of exports from the first month of 2021 to September stood at about Rs 3,764.69 crore as against Rs 3,637.13 crore in the same period last year. Sources said that despite the fall in exports, realizations have been higher due to higher prices. CIS countries including Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan imported 30.187 million kg of Indian tea during the January to September period of 2021 year as against 30.837 million kg in the same months of the previous 2020.
Exports to Iran also declined to 182.6 million kg from 20639 lakh kg during the period under review. Neighboring country, China lifted 44.7 lakh kg of Indian tea in the first nine months of 2021 as against 76.3 lakh kg in the same period last year. The United Arab Emirates, the US and Germany imported 103.4 million kg, 183 million kg and 6.7 million kg respectively.
