Saffron of Kashmir will also spread in the Harshil valley

saffron

After apple and rajma, the fragrance of saffron of Kashmir will also spread in the Harshil valley of Uttarakhand. The Horticulture Department has planned to promote the cultivation of saffron in five villages of the valley through the district plan. Last year, saffron seeds were given to some cultivators in Harshil Valley for trials, which have yielded positive results.

Encouraged by this, the Horticulture Department has planned to promote saffron cultivation in Sukki, Jhala, Mukhba, Purali and Jaspur villages of the valley. Where a total of 38 tenants will be given the benefit of the scheme and saffron will be cultivated on about 35 to 37 drain land. The department is taking the cooperation of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science and Technology, Jammu and Kashmir to implement this scheme on the ground.

Saffron is the most expensive sold

Saffron or Jaffran, rich in medicinal properties, is considered to be the most expensive spice in the whole world. The per gram price of saffron in the country is between Rs 100 and Rs 400. In such a situation, if the farmers of Harshil valley are oriented towards the cultivation of saffron, then it will definitely increase their income. At the same time, saffron cultivation will prove to be beneficial in case the apple crop is ruined due to unfavorable weather.

Weather favorable for saffron in Harshil

The weather is very favorable for the cultivation of saffron of Harshil valley. CHO Dr. Rajneesh Singh says that the main requirement for the cultivation of saffron is cool environment. Harshil valley receives good snowfall.

Saffron is produced well in the soil (alluvial soil) brought by the river. Being a Himalayan region, there is a similar soil in the Harshil valley. Told that after planting seeds in September-October, production will be available in May-June.

A budget of 9.8 lakh has been kept for the scheme in the district plan 2021-22. Along with providing saffron seeds to the cultivators, they will be given training. If needed, cooperation of Horticulture and Forestry University Bharsar and Agriculture University Pantnagar will also be taken.
