Despite the Corona crisis, exports of agriculture and allied goods registered an increase of 18.49 percent during the year 2020-21 as compared to the previous year. The exports of agriculture and allied items were 2.74 lakh crore during April 2020 to February 2021 as compared to 2.31 lakh crore during the same period in the previous year.
This shows that there has been an increase of 18.49 percent in exports. During the year 2019-20, exports of agriculture and related commodities from the country were 2.52 lakh crores while imports were 1.47 lakh crores. Among the items that contribute significantly to exports are wheat, non-basmati rice, soy mill, spices, sugar, cotton, fresh vegetables, processed vegetables and alcoholic beverages. There has been a tremendous jump in exports of wheat and other cereals compared to the previous year.
The export of wheat which was Rs 425 crores has increased to Rs 4583 crores from Rs 3283 crores and Rs 1318 crores for other cereals. 50,000 tons of wheat were exported to Afghanistan and 40000 tons of wheat to Lebanon. Thus, a huge increase of 727 percent was recorded in the export of wheat. Similarly, non-basmati rice exports grew by 132 percent. Non-basmati rice worth 13030 crores was exported in the year 2019-20 which increased to 30277 crores in 2020-21. Rice exports increased due to the new market. Among these markets are Brazil, Timor, Papua New Guinea, Chile, etc. Rice was also exported to countries such as Togo, Senegal, Malaysia, Madagascar, Iraq, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Mozambique etc.
Soya mill exports increased by 132 percent. Its exports in the year 2019-20 was Rs 3087 crores which increased to Rs 7224 crores in 2020-21. During April 2020 to February 2021, exports of spices were 26257 crores, sugar 17072 crores, cotton 11373 crores, fresh vegetables 4780 crores and processed vegetables exported 2846 crores. During this period 141034.25 crores of agricultural and related goods were imported.
