Government agencies have procured 669.59 lakh tonnes of paddy in the current procurement marketing session, which is 15 per cent higher than this time a year ago, amid protests from farmer unions over the new agricultural laws. According to a Central Government release issued on Thursday, the value of paddy purchased at the minimum support price (MSP) is Rs 1.26 lakh crore. Kharif crops start coming to the market from October. Paddy is also cultivated in Rabi (in winter) in some states.
The statement said that the government has procured 669.59 lakh tonnes of paddy till March 3. This is 14.78 percent more than the quantity of 583.34 lakh tonnes purchased till this time last year. This time around 97.70 lakh farmers have been benefited from the government procurement of paddy. The total value of paddy purchased on MSP is Rs 1,26,418.70 crore. Of this purchase made during the Kharif season, 202.82 lakh tonnes of paddy has been purchased from Punjab alone.
The Food Ministry has said that 91 lakh 80 thousand 412 cotton bales were purchased till March 3, worth Rs 26,716.31 crore. This benefited 18 lakh 97 thousand 002 farmers. It is worth mentioning here that farmers of Punjab, Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh are protesting on the borders of Delhi, mainly to demand the repeal of the three agricultural laws of the Central Government and to provide legal guarantee for procurement at the minimum support price.
