The government on Monday lifted the ban on onion exports. Exporters will be able to export all varieties of onions from January 1, 2021. In view of the skyrocketing prices of onion, the government had banned its export in September. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification that the ban on the export of all varieties of onions has been lifted and it will come into effect from 1 January 2021
There is a relief in onion prices in some parts of the country with the arrival of a new onion crop in the market. In October, onion prices in the capital Delhi stood at Rs 65-70 per kg. At the same time, onions even crossed the Rs 100 per kg level in September-October.
Relaxation in import rules now till 31 January
The government has extended the relaxation in onion import rules to 31 January next year. The government has taken this step in view of increasing the domestic supply of onion and curbing its retail prices. For onion imports, the government on 31 October had allowed imports under liberalized arrangement till 15 December, exempting the terms of the additional declaration on polarization and phytosanitary certification under the Plant Quarantine Order (PQ) 2003. Now this relaxation has been extended by one and a half months till 31 January. However, this exemption is granted with certain conditions.
