Due to the long delay in the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon due to soil moisture, farmers have started sowing of rabi crops
this year and around 9.84% sowing has been completed so far as compared to last year. Data from the agriculture department till Friday shows that the sowing of the rabi crop has been around 265.4 lakh hectares, which is 98.4 lakh hectares more than the same period last year.Average annual sowing in 5 years is 620.2 lakh ha.
The average annual sowing under the Rabi crops has been 620.2 lakh hectares in the last 5 years, which means that the average annual acreage has been 43% sown so far. Out of this, the area under sowing of wheat, the main Rabi crop, is about 97.2 lakh hectare, which is 0.51 percent more than the same period last year. On the other hand, India's largest pulses crop, gram, has been sown in about 57.4 lakh hectares, which is 30 percent more than the same period last year.
Southwest monsoon much better than in previous years
The area under sowing of mustard, the main oilseed crop of Rabi crop, is about 52.2 lakh hectare, which is 8.83 percent higher than the same period last year. Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said in a statement, "Our farmers are doing a great job and the central government will work to ensure the betterment of the agricultural sector in the country in the future." 9 percent above average during June to September
The data shows that rainfall during June to September was 9 percent above average, which has resulted in more than normal rainfall for the second consecutive year. This is the first time in nearly 60 years. In 2019 also, the rainfall due to the southwest monsoon was 10 percent above normal.
