Food Minister Piyush Goyal said that the Food Corporation of India has purchased 742 lakh metric tonnes of paddy at the minimum support price (MSP) in the Kharif season. Which is 18 percent more than the previous season. He told that the government had procured 627 lakh metric tonnes of paddy in the financial year 2019-20.
At the same time, according to Food Minister Piyush Goyal, 130 million tonnes of paddy has been procured in Punjab so far this season, which is 37% higher than the 95 lakh tonnes of the previous season. In Uttar Pradesh, 3.90 lakh tonnes of paddy has been purchased in the current season as against 76,000 tonnes in the previous year. In Tamil Nadu, it has reached 3.56 lakh tonnes as against 34 thousand tonnes.
In the coming 15 days, 2 lakh metric tonnes of moong, urad, and tur dal will be sent from buffer stock to various states and union territories. So that there is no shortage of pulses in the market. He said that during the lockdown, the ration was distributed to 80 crore people in the country without any hindrance.
Speaking on the rising prices of onions, the Food Minister said that the government had banned the export of onions on 14 September. At the same time, he said that the government has also started importing onions and so far 7,000 tonnes of onions have arrived in the country, with more than 25,000 tonnes expected before Diwali.
On the other hand, the government is constantly trying to curb the price of onions and potatoes. NAFED on Saturday called for bids from importers to supply 15,000 tonnes of the red onion by November 2020. The aim is to curb the rising prices of onions in the country and increase the availability in the domestic market. NAFED has bid to supply 40 to 60 millimeters of red onion from any country by November 2020. The price of this onion should be up to Rs 50 per kg.
According to the tender, importers can bid for a minimum supply of 2,000 tonnes. These can be made available in several lots of 500 tonnes.
