The Govt. paddy procurement for 2020-21 increased by 28.55 percent to 116.66 lakh tonnes in less than a month as compared to the same period last year. Most of the grain was purchased from

Punjab alone. Giving information on 22 October, the Union Food Ministry said that the procurement of paddy in Punjab and Haryana has been started from 26 September due to early harvest in Mandies, while in other states the procurement of paddy has started from 1 October. . More than 80 percent of the paddy crop in the country is grown during the Kharif season. The government works through the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state agencies to procure paddy at the minimum support price (MSP).

Purchase of 116.66 lakh tonnes of Paddy till 21 October

Paddy Kharif procurement continues smoothly in states like Haryana, Punjab, UP, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Kerala by 2020-21, and the ministry said in a statement. As of 21 October, about 116.66 lakh Tonnes of paddy had been procured, an increase of 28.55 percent compared to 90.76 lakh Tonnes procured in the year-ago period. In the total procurement of 116.66 lakh Tonnes paddy, Punjab alone contributed 75.11 lakh Tonnes, which is 64.38 percent of the total procurement has been purchased," the ministry said. 

Purchase of pulses and oilseeds at MSP 


If we talk about the MSP of the Current year the Central Govt has fixed the MSP (common grade) of paddy at Rs 1,868 per quintal, whereas the MSP for the A-grade variety of Paddy has been fixed at Rs 1,888 per quintal. In the case of cotton, the state-owned Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has purchased 2,72,136 cotton bales from 53,181 farmers at an MSP price of Rs 76,821 lakh till October 21. Further, through other nodal agencies, the government is to procure pulses and oilseeds at MSP under the Price Support Scheme (PSS), which is applicable when the market price falls below the support price.


In Haryana, Tamilnadu, and Maharashtra, till October 14, about 683.34 tonnes of moong and urad has been purchased from 862 farmers at an MSP value of Rs 6.36 crore. Similarly, 5,089 tonnes of coconut kernels have been purchased from 3,961 farmers in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu at an MSP value of Rs 52.40 crore during the said period. In relation to coconut kernel and urad, the rates are at or above MSP. The respective state governments are making arrangements to initiate procurement in relation to mungbean.
