In India, there are many states which are working to provide almost free electricity to farmers like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh to keep the farmer's input cost low or we can say that to maintain agriculture coasts down
.But their experts say that giving unlimited free electricity to farmers increases its misuse and due to this the losses of power companies are constantly increasing. They said If this is not stopped a serious power crisis may occur future. The new proposed power policy 2020 has suggested preventing its misuse by providing electricity subsidy to farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
But farmers fear that this way their subsidy can be removed gradually. This may increase their agricultural deficit. This is the reason why farmers' organizations are demanding the Central Government withdraw the 'Electricity Act Amendment Bill, 2020'. Farmers are preparing to block all over the country on November 5 and siege Delhi on November 26-27.
What is the new policy on electricity?
To improve the power system, the central government has introduced several proposals in four phases - 2014, 2018, 2019, and April 2020. According to an important proposal of the 'Electricity Act Amendment Bill, 2020', the state governments will not be able to allow farmers to consume unlimited electricity for agricultural work.
Instead, it has been suggested to install meters on the homes and fields of the farmers. Whatever electricity bill will come from this, the farmer will have to pay it first on the basis of fixed rates. Later, the State Governments will be able to put as much subsidy directly into the accounts of the farmers.
At present, the government has to bear a loss of 80 thousand crore rupees per year. The Center hopes that if every farmer gets an electricity meter and the states will have to provide direct cash assistance, the misuse of electricity will be prevented.
