Sugar Production decreased in India

Sugar production has decreased by 18.11 percent till 31 May 2020, the first eight months of the current crushing season 2019-20, which started from October 1, 2019.

During this period the total production of 268.21 lakh tonnes has been produced whereas 327.53 lakh tonnes of sugar had been produced during the same period of the previous crushing season. A total of 270 lakh tonnes of sugar is estimated to be produced by the end of the current crushing season.

Uttar Pradesh Sugar Production 

According to ISMA, in the current crushing season in Uttar Pradesh, sugar production has increased to 125.46 lakh tonnes by the end of May, while the state produced only 117.81 lakh tonnes of sugar in the same period of the last crushing season. Therefore, the production of sugar in Uttar Pradesh has so far increased by 7.65 lakh tonnes compared to last year. Crushing has been stopped in 105 of the 119 sugar mills of the state and currently crushing is going on in 14 mills.

Maharashtra  Sugar Production

 So far, only 60.98 lakh tonnes of sugar has been produced in the current crushing season in Maharashtra, which is 46.2 less than the previous crushing season. By this time 107.20 lakh tonnes of sugar had been produced in the last crushing season. The sugarcane crop in Maharashtra was heavily damaged by floods and drought.


Karnataka Sugar Production



Sugar production in the current crushing season in Karnataka has come down to 33.82 lakh tonnes till 31 May, while the state had produced 43.25 lakh tonnes of sugar in the same period of the previous crushing season. Crushing in mills in Karnataka ceased on 30 April 2020, but some mills are currently having a special season of crushing. Sugar production in Tamil Nadu has been 5.78 lakh tonnes in the current crushing season, which is lower than last year's 7.22 lakh tonnes.
The remaining States Sugar Production
Other states, including Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha, and Rajasthan, have produced 42.17 lakh tonnes of sugar till May 31.

Govt expected to increase production in June

The central government has allowed the sale of sugar in May quota in June. According to the industry, the lockdown has been opened, which has opened sweets shops, hotels etc., due to which the demand for sugar is expected to increase in the current month.
