Pests of Peral Millet (Bajra)

In the agriculture sector, a farmer puts its all efforts to provide food to the world. As all the things in agriculture done through the hard work and unbelievable efforts of farmers. After the month of efforts every year, the farmer's crop is reduced due to insects or pest attacks in the crop which affect the quality as well as quantity. In this article, we provide the major insects and their management in Cumbu(Pearl Millet) and Bajra in India.

Major Pests and insects of Pearl Millet.


1. Shoot Fly

In agriculture science term also known as Atherigona approximata. It is a grayish white fly which generally found in millet crop. It generally attack on young plant and dry the plant by causing dead heart. At the maturing stage, its attacks on the tip of the grain and developed grain from the lower side.

Control

You can reduce by seed treatment with imidacloprid 70 WS 10 g/kg.
You can also control by chemically sprayed Methyl demeton 25 EC 500 ml/ha, Dimethoate 30 EC 500 ml/ha, Neem seed kernel extract 5% and Neem Azal 1%.

2. Stem borer

In agriculture science term also known as Chilo partellus.It is flat oval, Yellowish brown with a brown head. In the adult stage, his moth is medium size and straw color. Symptoms of damage can be seen like boreholes, folded leaves have parallel shot holes, central shoot become dry and die. 



Control 

You can control them by mixing 8 kg Phorate 10G or 17 kg Carbofuran 3G in 50 kg of sand. Also can be controlled by spraying 1 kg Carbaryl 50 WP in 500 liters of water for 1 ha.

3. Pink stem borer

In agriculture science term also known as Sesamia inferens. It is pinkish-brown with redhead. An adult becomes straw-colored moth and white wings. It also attacks on the central shoot of plant it becomes dry and dead.

Control

You can control it by Spraying of phosalone 35% EC during 20 days of interval for effective control.

4. White Grubs

It is basically white but the moth is a brown color which generally found in early sowing variety and sometimes in monsoon season time. Which came from the soil and eat the root of a plant and go back during day time.

Control

You can control by seed treatment with chlorpyriphos 20 EC, quinalphos 25 EC, and imidacloprid.
In the Standing crop, it can be controlled by Monocrotophos 36 SL, quinalphos 25 EC, carbaryl 50 WP.
Also, Phorate 10 G can apply  4 and 8 kg/ acre mixed with sand and apply it to the soil before sowing. And can be applied after 15, 30 and 45 days of sowing (DAS) between the rows in the standing crop to control the white grub in millet.

5. Hairy Caterpillar

They are two types Bihar Hairy caterpillar and Red Hairy caterpillar. These are in a small and damage the lower surface of the leaves of the millet crop, hole and eat the leaves. They generally found in the second half of July and in October month.



Control

To prevent these caterpillar spray 600 ml Monocrotophos 36 SL or 500 ml Diclorwas 76 EC or 1200 ml Quinalphos 25 EC in 600 liters of water per ha.
